Practical tips

Tips for a restorative trip

  • Choose your retreat carefully

Read recent reviews, check teachers' credentials and the daily schedule. Temple meditation courses usually have strict rules (silence, dress, early mornings).

  • Jungle and national parks

Go with a local guide in Khao Sok and national parks. Entrance fees apply and some trails close in the rainy season.

  • Gentle treks

Around Chiang Mai and Pai, choose small-group treks with homestays in hill villages rather than large tours.

  • Ethical animal encounters

Prefer ethical elephant sanctuaries without riding or shows, and never touch or feed wild animals.

  • Slow travel

Three or four bases in two weeks are plenty: fewer transfers, more time to settle in.

  • Where to stay

Eco-lodges, jungle bungalows and small beach resorts often give the calmest experience.

FAQ

Wellness and nature in Thailand: FAQ

Where to do a yoga retreat in Thailand?

Koh Phangan (around Srithanu) and Chiang Mai are the best-known areas, with many schools and retreats. Koh Samui offers upmarket wellness resorts, and Koh Lanta a quieter setting.

Where can I experience the jungle in Thailand?

Khao Sok National Park is the classic choice, with its rainforest and Cheow Lan lake. The north (Chiang Mai, Pai) is better for treks and waterfalls, and Kanchanaburi for Erawan's falls.

Can you do a meditation retreat in a Thai temple?

Yes, several temples, notably around Chiang Mai, offer meditation courses for foreigners, often on a donation basis. Expect strict rules: white clothing, silence, early mornings.

What is the best time for a nature trip to Thailand?

Generally from November to February, when it is dry and cooler. Waterfalls flow best at the end of the rainy season, and some national park trails close during heavy rains. Month by month: best time to visit Thailand.

Which Thai island is the quietest?

Among our destinations, Koh Lanta, Koh Chang and parts of Koh Phangan (away from Haad Rin) are the calmest. Koh Kood, Koh Mak and Koh Yao Noi are even quieter. Compare them all in our Thai islands guide.
