Practical tips
Practical tips for a family trip
Health
See a travel health clinic 6–8 weeks before departure for vaccines and advice. Use mosquito repellent suited to your children's age, and good travel insurance is essential.
Transport with kids
Favour short domestic flights over long bus rides. Bring or book a car seat for private transfers: they are rarely provided by default.
Beaches and sea
Pick protected bays and swim in season. Watch for red flags and rip currents during the monsoon, and for jellyfish on some coasts.
Heat and sun
Plan outings early morning and late afternoon, keep lunchtime for the pool, and use high-factor sunscreen, hats and UV tops.
Accommodation
Family rooms and connecting rooms are common. A pool and a beachfront location make a big difference with young children.
Food
Mild dishes like khao man gai, fried rice or pad thai (ask for 'mai phet') and plenty of fresh fruit keep kids happy.
FAQ
Thailand with kids: FAQ
Is Thailand a good destination for families with young children?
Yes. It is one of the easiest destinations in Asia for families: friendly locals, good infrastructure, hospitals in main tourist areas and calm beaches. Choose destinations with easy access and limit the number of stops. More in our guide to Thailand with kids.
Which Thai island is best for families?
When should we go to Thailand with kids?
From November to February for the most comfortable weather across the country. During the July–August holidays, favour the Gulf of Thailand (Koh Samui), which is generally drier than the Andaman coast at that time. Our best time to visit Thailand guide compares every month.
How much does a family trip to Thailand cost?
As a rough guide, count about 30 to 120 € per person per day depending on the destination and comfort level, not counting international flights. For a family of four, expect around 2.5 to 3 times the per-person figure. Price your own trip with the family budget calculator.
Do children need vaccines for Thailand?
Routine vaccines should be up to date; other vaccines depend on the itinerary and age. Consult a doctor or travel health clinic a few weeks before leaving: this page does not replace medical advice. See also our Thailand health and vaccines guide.
