How it works
Backpacker uses the low end of each destination's daily range, mid-range the middle, and comfort a premium above the top end.
Each destination has its own daily cost: islands such as Samui or Phi Phi cost more than Chiang Mai or Pai.

Save money
Street food and small canteens cost a fraction of tourist restaurants, and are often the best food you'll have.
Accommodation is often noticeably cheaper outside the December–February peak (best time to visit Thailand), with weather that's frequently still good.
Balance a pricey island with a few days in the North, where your money goes much further.
An overnight journey from Bangkok to Chiang Mai or the South saves both a night's accommodation and a day.
Every transfer costs money and time. Longer stays also unlock weekly rates in many guesthouses.
Imported drinks, island taxis and ATM fees add up quickly. Budget them in the 'extras' line.
