Practical tips
Backpacker tips
Hostels & guesthouses
Dorms and simple fan rooms are easy to find. Book ahead for Full Moon dates and around Christmas and New Year; otherwise, you can often book a day or two before.
Keep the budget in check
Eat street food, take trains and buses, and withdraw larger sums less often: Thai ATMs charge a fixed fee per foreign card withdrawal (see our money and cards guide).
Social spots
Chiang Mai's Old City, Pai's walking street, Koh Tao's Sairee and Koh Phangan's Haad Rin are where solo travellers meet.
Scooters
Only ride with a valid licence (including the motorbike category on your international permit) and a helmet: accidents are common and travel insurance may not cover you otherwise.
Safety
Watch your drinks at parties, avoid anything involving drugs (penalties are severe), and keep a copy of your passport. More in our Thailand safety guide.
Travel light
A 40-litre backpack is plenty: laundry is cheap everywhere, and you will carry it onto boats and minibuses.
FAQ
Backpacking Thailand: FAQ
How much does backpacking Thailand cost per day?
As a rough guide, about 20 to 45 € a day in the north and in cities with dorms and street food, and more on the islands. Diving courses, parties and tours can quickly raise the budget. Our Thailand travel budget guide breaks it down.
What is the classic backpacking route in Thailand?
Bangkok, then north to Chiang Mai and Pai (possibly Chiang Rai), then south to the Gulf islands (Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) or the Andaman coast (Krabi, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta). Three weeks is a comfortable minimum, as in our 21-day Thailand itinerary.
Is Thailand safe for solo travellers?
Thailand is generally considered safe for solo travellers, including women. The main risks are road accidents (especially scooters), scams in tourist areas and drinks at parties: use the usual precautions.
Do I need to book hostels in advance?
Not usually, except around Christmas–New Year, Songkran in April and Full Moon Party dates on Koh Phangan, when popular hostels fill up.
How do I get around Thailand cheaply?
Trains (including night trains), government and private buses, minibuses and combined bus-boat tickets to the islands. Budget airlines are also worth comparing for long distances. Every option is in our guide to getting around Thailand.
