Thai Airways: stranded bags sent on any airline, payout automatic

Thai Airways says delayed baggage will now be sent on any carrier flying to a passenger's destination, and that compensation will be paid without the passenger having to file a complaint. The change follows the flooding in Bangkok in late September 2026, which left about 25,000 bags stranded.

In short

  • Announced by Thai Airways chairman Lavaron Sangsnit on 14 October 2026.
  • Delayed bags will be forwarded on any carrier serving the passenger's destination.
  • Compensation is automatic: no complaint has to be filed.
  • About 25,000 bags were stranded and more than 200 flights cancelled in the disruption.

What to do

  1. 1Keep your baggage receipt until your bag is returned to you.
  2. 2Contact Thai Airways directly if your bag is still missing.
  3. 3Keep receipts for essentials you had to buy while you were without your luggage.
  4. 4Check before departure whether your travel insurance covers delayed baggage.

What changes for delayed bags?

Thai Airways will pay to forward delayed baggage on any airline that flies to a passenger's destination, instead of holding the bag until one of its own flights is available, chairman Lavaron Sangsnit said on 14 October 2026, according to the Bangkok Post. Compensation will also be paid to every affected passenger automatically, without a complaint being filed, he said. A special compensation package, including additional frequent-flyer miles, still has to go to the airline's board for approval.

The change matters most at Suvarnabhumi Airport, where checked bags piled up after the flooding in Bangkok in late September 2026. Passengers who are still without a bag can now have it routed on another carrier that serves their destination, rather than waiting for space on a Thai Airways flight.

Who is covered, and do you need to claim?

  • Passengers on Thai Airways flights disrupted by the late-September 2026 flooding around Bangkok, including those whose checked bags were left at Suvarnabhumi Airport.
  • According to the Bangkok Post, compensation will be paid to all affected passengers without a complaint being filed.
  • The scale of the disruption, as reported by the airline: about 25,000 bags stranded and more than 200 flights cancelled.
  • The amounts, and the extra frequent-flyer miles, are not final: the special package still needs board approval.

For travellers, the other half of the question is insurance: a delayed-baggage benefit under travel insurance can cover essentials while the airline's package is still being finalised.

Has Suvarnabhumi gone back to normal?

Yes. According to the Bangkok Post, baggage services have returned to normal, there is no further backlog and punctuality has improved, and senior executives are to carry out on-site inspections at Suvarnabhumi. The airline has also dropped cuts to overtime pay during crises and major international events in order to keep enough staff on the front line, and says further measures will address risks from extreme weather and flooding — the kind of disruption that peaks in Bangkok during the rainy season.

The board appointed deputy national police chief Pol Gen Thatchai Pitaneelaboot to investigate the disruption, with findings due within 30 days, the chairman said. Initial findings pointed to too few front-line staff — about 200 employees were absent because flooding prevented them from getting to work — along with delays in starting emergency procedures and a failure to bring in reserve staff quickly. The board also ordered a review of outsourcing contracts for baggage handling and ground operations, including those with Wingspan Services.
