Hotels in Bangkok: the two we would book

A riverside art-and-antiques retreat in Dusit and a boutique hotel on the Chao Phraya, close to the old town.

Suites and pool villas among art and antiques, in three acres of gardens on the Chao Phraya.

Why we picked it

What convinced us is the scale and the character: a house of art and antiques in three acres of river gardens, with its own pier, a shuttle boat into town and three Michelin Keys. We would book it for a slow Bangkok: mornings in the garden or at the Opium Spa, a riverside pool villa as the base, and the old town reached by boat rather than by traffic.

Choosing between the two

Dusit garden retreat or old-town riverside: how to choose

Both hotels sit on the Chao Phraya, in two very different parts of Bangkok.

Dusit: a garden retreat on the river

The Siam stands in three acres of gardens, with its own pier, a shuttle boat to the central Saphan Taksin pier and an Opium Spa. Choose it for a slow, design-led Bangkok, with pool villas and butler service.

Phra Athit: the river beside the old town

Riva Surya is a 68-room boutique hotel on Phra Athit Road, connected by Chao Phraya Express boats to the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Chinatown. Choose it for a riverside pool and the old town on your doorstep.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Hotels in Bangkok: the questions we hear most.

Where should I stay in Bangkok for a first visit?

For temples and the old town, stay on the river: Riva Surya sits on Phra Athit Road and lists the Grand Palace, Wat Pho and Chinatown among the sights it connects to by Chao Phraya Express boat. For a calm garden retreat, The Siam in Dusit has its own shuttle boat to the central Saphan Taksin pier. Our where to stay guide compares every district.

How far ahead should I book a hotel in Bangkok?

Book as soon as your dates are fixed if you travel between November and February, the cool and dry months, or around public holidays, and if you want a pool villa or a river-view category: these tend to go first. Use the See prices button of each hotel for live availability.

When is the best time to visit Bangkok?

November to February is the coolest and driest stretch; March to May is hot, and the rainy season runs from June to October. Rates change with the season and the room category, which is why we show categories rather than prices.

How do I get from the airport to my hotel?

Riva Surya offers an airport transfer on request. The Siam can be reached by road, or by its complimentary shuttle boat from Saphan Taksin pier (call the hotel to book a seat). Our airport guide explains the options from Suvarnabhumi.

Suvarnabhumi airport guide
Is a riverside hotel convenient for sightseeing?

Yes. Riva Surya lists Chao Phraya Express boats, the MRT and the Skytrain among its connections, and The Siam runs its own shuttle boat to Saphan Taksin pier, a central point on the river. Travelling by water is a relaxed way to reach the main sights.

Which of the two hotels suits families?

The Siam describes its 100 sqm Premier Garden View Suites as a popular choice for families, and its suites and villas can host an extra bed or a baby cot. Riva Surya has a riverside pool and a babysitter service.

Can I book these hotels directly?

Yes. The See prices button under The Siam Hotel opens the hotel’s official website. For Riva Surya Bangkok it opens Trip.com, one of our booking partners. Both open in a new tab.
