The most beautiful beaches in Phuket are Nai Harn, Kata Noi, Kata, Freedom Beach and Surin, all on the west coast. Kata and Karon suit families, Patong is the lively party beach, Bang Tao and Surin are quieter and more upmarket, and Mai Khao in the north is long and empty, next to the airport. The sea is calm from November to April; from May to October the swell and red flags make swimming dangerous on the west coast.

Kata's little sister, quieter, framed by green hills. Beautiful at sunset.

My tips for Phuket's beaches

What I wish I had known the first time.

Stay in Kata or Nai Harn rather than Patong if you want beach first and nightlife second.
Rent a scooter or use Grab: beaches are far apart and taxis are expensive.
Go to Freedom Beach by longtail from Patong in the morning, before the tour boats.
For sunset, finish the day at Promthep Cape or on Kata Noi.
