Flying from Bangkok to Phuket

The fastest option, with many departures every day.

Flights last about 1 hour 25 minutes. Low-cost airlines (Thai AirAsia, Thai Lion Air, Nok Air, Thai Vietjet) mostly use Don Mueang (DMK). Full-service carriers (Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways) and some low-cost flights use Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Check the airport on your ticket: moving between the two takes 1 to 1.5 hours.

Best if you land from Europe the same day: no airport change. Bags are usually included with full-service airlines.

The overnight bus

The cheapest direct option, with no change.

VIP buses leave from Bangkok's Southern bus terminal (Sai Tai Mai) in the evening and arrive at Phuket Bus Terminal 2, north of Phuket Town, in the morning. Book with the state operator Transport Co. (Bor Kor Sor) or a well-known private company, not with an unknown agency on Khao San Road.

  • Choose a VIP 24 or VIP 32 seat bus: seats recline further.
  • Keep valuables in your day bag, on your lap, not in the luggage hold or overhead rack.
  • Bring a jumper: the air conditioning is cold at night.

Train and bus via Surat Thani

The railway does not reach Phuket, but you can combine it with a bus.

Night trains from Krung Thep Aphiwat station reach Surat Thani (the station is in Phun Phin) in about 9 to 12 hours. From there, buses and minivans run to Phuket in 4 to 5 hours, often via Takua Pa or Phang Nga. It is a long day, but a good choice if you want to stop at Khao Sok, which lies on the way.
