Overview

North Thailand at a glance

Northern Thailand is where the country slows down. Chiang Mai, the old capital of the Lanna kingdom, is the natural base: hundreds of temples inside and around its old city walls, famous night markets, cooking schools and ethical elephant sanctuaries in the surrounding valleys.

From there, the winding road to Pai leads to a laid-back valley of rice fields and canyons, while Chiang Rai, further north, is known for the White Temple and the Golden Triangle. On the way up from Bangkok, the ruins of Sukhothai, the first Thai capital and a UNESCO World Heritage site, are best explored by bicycle.

Best for

  • Temples and Lanna culture
  • Trekking, hill villages and waterfalls
  • Cooking classes, markets and street food
  • A cooler climate, especially in December and January

Less ideal for: beach holidays, and the haze season from roughly late February to April.

Weather

North Thailand: weather month by month

The best time is November to February: dry, sunny days and cool nights, sometimes chilly in the mountains. From about late February to April, smoke from agricultural burning often causes haze. The rainy season runs roughly from May–June to October: lush and green, but muddy on the trails.

Getting to and around North Thailand

Getting there

Flights from Bangkok to Chiang Mai take about 1 hour 15 minutes, with many departures a day; Chiang Rai also has an airport. The overnight sleeper train from Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes roughly 11 to 13 hours and is an experience in itself (compare every option in our Bangkok to Chiang Mai guide). Long-distance buses leave from Bangkok's northern terminal (Mo Chit).

Getting around

Buses and minivans link the towns: Chiang Mai – Chiang Rai takes about 3 to 4 hours, Chiang Mai – Pai about 3 hours on a road with hundreds of bends (motion-sickness tablets recommended). In Chiang Mai, use red songthaews or ride-hailing apps. Renting a scooter is popular, but only with the right licence and insurance.

FAQ

North Thailand: frequently asked questions

How many days should I spend in North Thailand?

Around 10 to 12 days lets you see Chiang Mai, Pai and Chiang Rai without rushing, with a stop in Sukhothai on the way. With only a week, focus on Chiang Mai plus either Pai or Chiang Rai.

When is the best time to visit North Thailand?

November to February, when days are dry and sunny and nights are cool. Avoid late February to April if you are sensitive to air quality, as agricultural burning often causes haze. From June to October it is green and less crowded, but expect regular downpours.

Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai?

Chiang Mai if you only have time for one: more temples, markets, activities and places to stay. Chiang Rai is smaller and quieter, and is mainly visited for the White Temple, the Blue Temple and trips to the Golden Triangle. Many travellers see both. Full comparison: Chiang Mai vs Chiang Rai.

Is Pai worth the trip?

Yes if you like a relaxed pace: rice fields, hot springs, a canyon at sunset and a small walking-street night market. The road from Chiang Mai is very winding (about 3 hours by minivan), so plan at least 2 to 3 nights to make it worthwhile.
