In short
- Pat-down replaces handheld metal-detector checks as the secondary step
- In force 1 November 2026; announced on 27 October 2026
- Walk-through detectors and body scanners remain the primary check
What to do
- 1Allow extra time at security, especially at peak periods.
- 2Empty pockets of metal items and ready your bag for scanning.
- 3Tell staff before screening if pregnant, injured or using an implanted device.
What changes at the checkpoint?
Travellers still pass through the walk-through metal detector or body scanner first. The change is the second step: a pat-down by hand instead of the handheld metal-detector check, according to The Pattaya News, citing the airport's announcement of 27 October 2026.
The Pattaya News reports that the airport cites Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand rules and ICAO recommendations, and cites CAAT Regulation No. 113. For other trip risks, see our safety guide.
Who is affected, and how early should you arrive?
Anyone departing from or transiting through Don Mueang in Bangkok. According to The Pattaya News, the airport says screening may take slightly longer in busy periods and advises extra time. See also our Suvarnabhumi guide.
- Empty your pockets of keys, coins and phones while queuing.
- Have your bag ready for the scanner.
- Say beforehand if you are pregnant, injured or have an implanted medical device.
