Cheow Lan Lake: day trip or overnight?
The reservoir behind Ratchaprapha Dam is the heart of Khao Sok: 165 km² of emerald water between limestone cliffs.
The day trip leaves the village around 8 am, reaches Ban Ta Khun pier in an hour, then strings together a longtail ride between the karsts, a swim, lunch on a raft and a short walk to a cave. Expect 2,000 to 2,500 THB from the village, plus the lake fee (300 THB) and pier fee (40 THB) in cash. From Khao Lak or Krabi the same tour costs more and adds four hours on the road.
Staying the night changes everything: you see the lake at sunset and at dawn, when mist lies on the water and the day-trippers have not arrived. Basic rafts have a mattress, a mosquito net and shared bathrooms; the nicer ones have private facilities. The lake fee covers your whole stay on the water.
Nam Talu cave: who is it for, and when?
An underground river you wade upstream, sometimes waist-deep: the most adventurous trip from the lake.
You reach it from the lake after about an hour's walk through the forest, then spend around an hour inside with a headlamp. It is closed from 1 June to 30 November, because the water can rise very fast after a downpour. The rest of the year, guides decide on the day based on the previous night's rain: trust them.

- In the rainy season, the shorter, dry Coral Cave takes its place
Hiking in the jungle from the village
The park headquarters area, walkable from the village, can be explored without a guide on the main trail.
The main trail follows the Sok River past a series of waterfalls, including Wing Hin and Ton Kloi, the latter about 7 km from the entrance. Start at 8 am with two litres of water each and be back before 4 pm. Side trails require a guide, who will also spot animals you would walk straight past.
Canoe, tubing and night walk: the short trips
Three activities that fill an afternoon or evening without leaving the village.
Sok River canoe
About 800 THBA guide paddles an inflatable canoe while you watch for monitor lizards, kingfishers and snakes in the branches. Mornings bring better light and more active animals.
Tubing
300 – 500 THBAn inner tube and an hour drifting downstream. Perfect on a hot afternoon; skip it when the river is high and brown.
Night walk
2 hA torch-lit walk in the park with a guide. Wear closed shoes and light long trousers.
All three can be booked the day before at any agency or through your guesthouse, usually for the same price.
Which season suits which tour?
Khao Sok is one of the wettest places in Thailand, but every season has something going for it.

Elephants and animals: what we do not recommend
Several camps around Khao Sok still sell elephant rides and bathing.

How to get to Khao Sok for these tours
The village sits on the road between the Andaman coast and the Gulf, halfway to everywhere.

Minivans drop you at the village junction, or at your guesthouse if you ask when booking. Once there, everything is on foot or by tuk-tuk, and agencies pick you up for the lake trip. Try not to arrive in the evening: the last connections leave in the late afternoon.
