What kind of city is Hat Yai?
Big, commercial, and often mistaken for the provincial capital.
According to Wikipedia, the municipality had 191,696 people in 2024, making it the fifth-largest city in Thailand; the whole district reaches 406,513, and the metropolitan area with Songkhla about 650,000. The city covers 21 km² and lies in the south, near the border with Malaysia.
It is often taken for the provincial capital, but that is Songkhla, which holds the administration and the culture, while Hat Yai is the business centre. That difference explains the mood: Hat Yai is livelier, more commercial and more turned towards exchange.
What Hat Yai is not

Eating and wandering in Hat Yai
The real interest of the city happens at the table.
Hat Yai is first of all a food city: you eat in the street, at markets and in small stalls, with influences from southern Thai cooking but also Chinese and Malay, which gives a more varied cuisine than in other towns of the region. Street vendors, fruit stalls and canteens fill the shopping streets, especially at the end of the day.

The simplest plan is to arrive in the late afternoon, walk to the stalls when the heat falls, then taste a bit of everything without hunting for one address: in a city this size, the best plates are often the ones locals already queue for. One evening and one morning are enough to get a feel; two nights if you like cities that move.
Hat Yai, the gateway from Malaysia
A city of passage between two countries.
For many travellers coming from Malaysia, Hat Yai is the first big Thai city: you arrive by road or rail, and find what you need to continue north. We give no distance or time to the border, for lack of a reliable measurement. That position explains the character of the city: you meet visitors from both sides of the border, and trade, catering and services are organised for them. How to get there
By air is the simplest option.
Hat Yai has its own international airport, code HDY. By road, Bangkok is 933.9 km away, about 11 h 13 of driving without a break (OSRM estimate, 28/09/2026): a trip to make in several stages, or by air.
