Where is Chumphon and what is it?
A provincial town, halfway between Bangkok and the deep South.
Chumphon is the capital of its province, on the Gulf of Thailand coast. According to Wikipedia it had around 33,600 people in 2018, over 21.10 km², and its main activity is still agriculture. It lies roughly halfway between the capital and the big southern cities, which explains its role as a stopover.
Do not look for a seafront of hotels or an old town to visit. Chumphon is a place of passage that has kept the rhythm of a mid-sized town: shopping streets, a railway station, markets and restaurants for residents. Few travellers are around outside connection days, and that is exactly what makes it restful after the capital.

Chumphon, gateway to Koh Tao
The reason most travellers stop here.
Chumphon is one of the departure ports for Koh Tao, the diving island in the Gulf of Thailand. Travellers coming down from Bangkok spend the night here, then take the boat the next day. The full route is in our Bangkok to Koh Tao guide, and the ferry guide compares the crossings.
Mind the geography: Chumphon faces the Gulf, not the Andaman Sea. The islands of Trang or Ranong, such as Koh Phayam, lie on the other side of the peninsula and cannot be reached from here. For Koh Tao, see also its destination page.
Coffee, coconuts and the rhythm of the town
A town that lives off its fields.
In practice that means a town where you have a good coffee in the morning, meet coconut sellers at every market and eat without surprise or staging. If you have half a day before the boat, this is the best use of it: a coffee, a lap of the market, a simple meal, and you leave knowing where you slept.
For a longer stay in the region, the Gulf islands are richer. From Chumphon, compare it with the neighbouring port town of Surat Thani, which serves Koh Samui and Koh Pha Ngan, before deciding which port you board from.
Who Chumphon suits, and who it does not
A useful stop, without pretension: it does one job well, and asks little of you in return.
It suits people travelling south in stages, travellers taking the Koh Tao boat and those who like to see a Thailand without tourists: a simple town where you eat well and are not pitched to at every corner. For the province’s beaches, such as Hat Sai Ri or Thung Wua Laen, you need a dedicated trip, and they are not the postcard beaches of the islands.
