The three kinds of organised tour in Thailand
They are sold as one thing, but they are different products with different prices and different levels of freedom.
A small-group tour has published departure dates and a fixed route, with a group size the operator states. A tailor-made trip is built for your dates, usually by an agency working with a local agent. A city-plus-beach package is the same organised product with a beach extension at the end, and it is the formula French and German operators sell most.
Small-group tour
Fixed datesGroup size is published (10 to 12 people on average at Intrepid, 4 to 22 at INTRO Travel), the guide is English-speaking by default and departures run all year. From US$1,399 per person for 12 days.
Tailor-made trip
Your datesYou choose the route and the pace; an agency books it, often through a local agent at destination. More expensive but flexible: around EUR 4,000 per booking as the Evaneos average, and from EUR 1,595 per person for two weeks with a German specialist.
City-plus-beach package
With flights10 to 14 nights covering Bangkok, the north and a beach region, with flights, transfers, hotels and excursions included. Advertised from EUR 706 in France, and from EUR 2,299 for 18 days with flights in Germany.
What an organised Thailand tour costs
Prices below are the ones we read on operator and agency pages on 29 September 2026. They move with the season and the departure date.

Three things move the price more than the route does: the season (about 35% more from November to February), the hotel category, and whether entries and excursions are included. A EUR 2,299 package that includes EUR 300 to EUR 400 of excursions and entries is not the same product as a cheaper tour that leaves them out.
What is included, and what you still pay for
Operator pages use the same words for different things. These are the two lists to read line by line.
- Accommodation in the hotels named in the programme
- Transfers and air-conditioned transport between stops
- A guide for the whole tour (English-speaking by default with international operators)
- Excursions, entries and boat trips mentioned in the programme
- Meals listed in the programme, usually breakfast only
- Taxes and service charges
- International flights, unless the package says “with flights”
- Domestic flights the programme does not mention
- Drinks, alcohol and bottled water outside meals
- Travel insurance, which most operators make compulsory
- Tips for guides and drivers
- Visa fees, laundry, souvenirs and personal spending
- The single-room supplement and holiday-period supplements
Organised tour or travelling on your own?
Thailand is one of the easiest countries in Asia to travel independently, so the honest answer depends on your time and your appetite for planning.

How many days you need
Two weeks is the sweet spot for a first organised tour: Bangkok, the north and one beach region. Anything shorter drops a region; anything longer lets you add Isan, Khao Sok or a second coast.

Seven checks before you pay
- 1Group size: 10 to 12 people is a small group, 15 to 20 is a coach tour, and it changes the pace.
- 2Inclusions, line by line: entries, boat trips and transfers are where cheap tours save money.
- 3Minimum participants: some operators cancel if the group is not full — one German operator publishes a minimum of 15 travellers.
- 4Language of the guide: English-speaking is the default; German-speaking guiding is a selling point on the German market, and French-speaking guiding is an option you have to ask for.
- 5Nights, not days: count the nights on the ground and the number of hotel changes.
- 6Single supplement: solo travellers pay it unless they accept a shared room.
- 7Extensions and season supplements: a beach extension is usually a separate price, and holidays or festivals cost more.
When to go, and what it does to the price
High season in Thailand runs from November to February and prices are about 35% higher than in the low season. That premium applies to hotels and to tours. Shoulder months change the picture by coast: the Andaman side is at its best from November to April, the Gulf islands from June to August. Extras to budget for
Tips are not compulsory in Thailand, but they are expected on guided tours and are rarely included in the price.
- Guide: about 250 THB per day, if you are happy with the service
- Driver: about 150 THB per day
- Restaurant or hotel: 20 to 50 THB
- Massage: 50 to 100 THB for the therapist
