Koh Samui Airport (USM): the complete guide to Samui's island airport

Koh Samui airport is one of the prettiest little airports I know: thatched roofs, tropical gardens and no big glass terminal. It is also privately owned, which explains why flights there cost more than to Phuket or Krabi. Here is who flies there in 2026, how to get to your beach from arrivals, what to know before your departure, and the cheaper ways to reach the island, including from Germany and Europe.

Short answer

Koh Samui airport (USM) is a small, open-air airport privately owned by Bangkok Airways, about 2 km north of Chaweng. Bangkok Airways flies there from Bangkok Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Krabi, Pattaya, Singapore and Hong Kong. Scoot flies from Singapore and Berjaya Air from Kuala Lumpur Subang. Fares are high because the number of flights is capped. Chaweng is 10 to 15 minutes by taxi. The cheaper alternative is a flight to Surat Thani plus a ferry.

Samui International Airport opened in April 1989. It was built and is still owned and run by Bangkok Airways, not by Airports of Thailand, which manages Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai. It sits in the north-east of the island, between Bophut and Chaweng.

The terminals are open-air pavilions under thatched roofs, with shops and cafés in a small village-style courtyard. Only a few rooms, such as the lounges, are air-conditioned. Domestic and international departures use separate buildings a short walk apart, and small open trams take you to the plane.

Thai Smile no longer exists: it was merged into Thai Airways in 2024, and as far as I can verify, Thai Airways does not run its own Samui flights in 2026. You can still book Samui on many foreign airlines, but the flight itself is operated by Bangkok Airways under a codeshare.

Why are flights to Koh Samui so expensive?

It is not just high season.

  • The airport is private and its owner is also the main airline, so there is little competition.
  • The number of flights per day is capped. The limit was raised from 50 to 73 daily flights in 2024, still small for an island of this size.
  • Planes are small (ATR turboprops and Airbus A319/A320), so there are few seats per flight.
  • Low-cost airlines such as Thai AirAsia do not fly to Samui itself.

In return, Bangkok Airways fares include a checked bag, seat selection and a snack or meal on board. For a family of four, I always compare the total with the Surat Thani option before booking.

From the airport to your beach

  • Shared minivans leave from the arrivals area when full, usually about 130 to 200 THB per person.
  • Grab works on Koh Samui. Drivers cannot use the airport pick-up lane and meet you at a spot just outside arrivals.
  • Many hotels offer pick-ups: compare their price with the taxi counter.

Departure tips

A relaxed airport, if you know the rules.

  • Bangkok Airways check-in closes 30 minutes before domestic flights and 40 minutes before international flights at Samui. I arrive 1.5 to 2 hours ahead in high season.
  • Economy fares on Bangkok Airways usually include 20 kg of checked baggage. Check your fare, especially on partner tickets.
  • In the departure area, Bangkok Airways passengers get free snacks, coffee, tea and soft drinks.
  • The Blue Ribbon lounge is for business class and elite members, or paid access.
  • Airport taxes are included in the ticket price.
